Sometimes, you may feel the need to look beyond your daily skin care routine to help brighten your complexion and kick your skin management plan up a notch. Chemical peels can help transform your skin and may quickly reveal a more youthful look.

How do chemical peels work?
Typically, a solution is applied to the skin, which causes your skin to peel and reveals new, healthier-looking skin underneath.

What skin concerns do chemical peels address?
Chemical peels, such as Obagi Blue Peels®, may improve the appearance of the following common skin concerns to varying degrees, based on the type and strength of the peel:1,2

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Hyperpigmentation and suns spots*
  • Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation*
  • Rough, uneven skin
  • Photodamage*

What should I consider when determining if I should get a chemical peel?
First and foremost, your skin care physician can help you determine if you are a good candidate for a chemical peel, and if so, which one would be best for you.

What you should consider:

  • Downtime. Superficial (or lunchtime) peels have little to no downtime, so you can likely get one and get right back to your regularly scheduled life. Medium and deep peels will require some recovery time – your doctor will go over your post-procedure routine so you know exactly what to expect.

  • Number of treatments. Many times, you will start seeing results after just one chemical peel of any strength. With our superficial Blue Peel RADIANCE®, users noticed tighter, smoother, brighter-looking skin after just one peel.3,** However, often a series of such superficial peels is recommended for optimal results; work closely with your skin care physician to determine how many peels (and in what period of time) will help you achieve your desired results.

  • Trust in your professional. It is key that you have confidence in the person who is applying your peel – particularly with deeper peels, as that professional will need to know your skin well enough to determine the precise time to remove the solution to get you the results you want. Also, peels are not without risk and possible side effects, which can include swelling, infection, discoloration, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.4 A provider you trust will walk you through all of this information and help you make an informed decision about what’s right for you and your skin.

As a final note, never forget to wear sunscreen daily.  The most important thing to remember after receiving a peel is to wear a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher at all times! Not only is sunscreen important to help maintain your healthier-looking skin, but it’s a practical addition to your skin care regimen. You are making an investment in your skin care; sunscreen is like an insurance policy to protect that investment and help you maintain your results.
