Happy Healthy Life Part 1: Good Sleep for Better Skin
Benjamin Franklin said, “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” Had Ben lived in current times, we feel certain he would have added women to the ranks of those who benefit from sufficient sleep, and we like to think that he would have added to his list the fact that good sleep can contribute to maintaining healthy skin.
What is it about sleep that is so good for the skin? It turns out your body is designed to sleep 7-8 hours per night, and it’s during Stage 3 - the deep sleep stage – that your body releases naturally-occurring hormones into the body that work to help improve skin texture, reduce skin wrinkles, and heal wounds or injuries.
That’s good news for those of us who can regularly get 7-8 hours of sleep per night. But what about those nights where counting the minutes tick by is more likely than counting Zs? While prolonged sleep deprivation has been linked to mental and physical disease, a few hours of sleep deprivation won’t hurt much. Sleep researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine tell us that the brain has a built-in reflex that helps you sleep deeper and longer when you're sleep deprived, and recommend that if you do miss a few hours one night, to try to get a good night’s sleep the following night to recover. Sage advice, indeed.
