Exploring the Benefits of Peptides

For centuries, explorers sought the fountain of youth. They traveled far and wide searching for a magic potion that would turn back time.

Nowadays, tales of magical waters are a nice distraction for a rainy Saturday afternoon at the local movie theater. But the underlying desire to look younger is as strong as ever. And - lucky for us - with the advances of science and an Obagi® skin care regimen, we are now closer to the possibility of improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

We can’t help but wonder what the explorers who sought the fountain of youth would think of Obagi’s Professional-C™ Peptide Complex. They probably would have been dazzled by how it:

  • Improves the appearance of aging skin, the feel of firmness, and the look of fine lines and wrinkles1
  • Contains synthetic forms of plant growth factors – kinetin and zeatin, as well as Vitamins C and E and sodium hyaluronate1
  • Contains SNAP-8 (acetyl octapeptide), which reduces the appearance of wrinkles2
  • Feels wonderful on the skin, as a majority of users felt their skin looked brighter

Do you want to discover how Obagi’s Professional-C Peptide Complex can become a part of your daily beauty regimen? Visit your skin care physician or find one here.

5 Steps to Better Skin in Winter

5 Steps to Better Skin in Winter

Baby, it’s cold outside! This harsh winter weather can take its toll on your skin, but don’t worry – here are 5 tips to help keep your skin as soft as possible this winter season.

  1. Add extra moisture.

Even if you consistently hydrate your skin, consider moisturizing more often or even switching to a heavier moisturizer during these cold days.  Our Hydrate Luxe may be one to check out –its balm-like texture helps provide extra-rich moisturization.  Both Hydrate and Hydrate Luxe feature the ingredient Hydromanil and can deliver moisture that lasts throughout the day.1

While you’re at it, remember to keep your lips hydrated with a moisturizing lip balm with skin protecting ingredients to help prevent chapping.

  2. Stay warm.

Pretty obvious, right? But still essential. Do what you can to remain warm this winter: this means bundling up when you go outside, heating your house/room when necessary, and using a humidifier if you live in a dry climate. Your skin will thank you for taking this easy step in these colder months!

  3. Up the fatty acids in your diet.

Foods that contain a good dose of healthy fats – including almonds, walnuts, salmon, and olive oil – may help keep your skin hydrated.2 These are also superfoods that can help your heart health…so they’ll work double duty for you in winter!

  4. Cool it with the baths.

Baths can be very relaxing and warming when it’s so cold out, but try to limit them this winter, and keep the water warm – not hot. Using hot water in your bath or shower can actually break down the lipid barriers in skin, which may result in moisture loss and can dry out your skin.3

  5. Don’t forget sunscreen!

Just because you can’t see the sun as much in winter doesn’t mean it can’t affect your skin. In fact, UVA sun rays (which can penetrate into deeper levels of the skin and contribute to skin aging) are present year-round and can pierce through glass and clouds.4 So, when we say it’s best to use a broad spectrum sunscreen every day, we mean EVERY DAY – winter included.

There you go – these 5 easy steps may make a difference between dry, chapped skin and more hydrated, softer skin this winter. Tell us in the comments below what helps keep your skin moisturized when it’s cold outside!

The Top 10 Beauty Resolutions You’ll Want to Keep Next Year

12.28.2014, 13:12 CST | Posted In: Dry Skin, Eye Area, Lines & Wrinkles, Prevention & Protection, Signs of Aging, Health & Beauty, Products, Skin Care

Beauty Resolutions

We’re almost there – a new year, a new time to take a look at our lives and decide what we want to do differently.  Well, all of us at Obagi want to help you look your absolute best and put your best face forward.  So, without further ado, here they are…The Top 10 Beauty Resolutions You’ll Want to Keep Next Year:

  1. Wear sunscreen.  Every day.

This is a no-brainer, and when used as part of a comprehensive sun protection program*, a broad spectrum sunscreen is one of the best ways to help keep your skin looking as healthy and youthful as possible!

  2. Drink more water.

Water nourishes your cells, tissues, and organs – and guess what your biggest organ is?  Your skin!  Staying properly hydrated can help fight some of the visible signs of dehydration, including dryness and wrinkling.1  So keep that water bottle filled up!

  3. Visit your skin care physician for a check-in.

It’s a good idea to check in with your trusted skin care provider at least once a year, even if you don’t have a particular concern or question at the time. And, be sure to ask him or her if there’s anything else you need to do or other products you can add to your routine to help you achieve your healthiest skin.

Don’t have a skin care physician you love? Start here.

  4. Think Vitamin C.

Oranges and lemons come to mind when we think of Vitamin C, but we invite you to think about this ingredient’s benefits for your skin. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant and can help address the appearance of aging skin.  Specifically, it can help calm skin,2-4 brighten skin,5,6 retain moisture,7 and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.8,9

Speak with your skin care physician to see if one or more of Obagi’s Professional-C™ Products may be a good fit for your current skin care routine.

  5. Finally get that extra hour of sleep.

Don’t we always say, “If I just had an extra hour to sleep…”? Well, we CAN have it! Try planning it out this way: decide when you need to get up in the morning, and count back 7½ to 8 hours – that’s when you should probably go to bed. And if you need some motivation to get yourself in bed earlier, know that lack of sleep can be a factor in developing under-eye puffiness.10

If you already have bags, though, don’t worry – our ELASTIderm® Eye Serum may  may help!

  6. Don’t forget your neck! (And chest!)

It’s easy to remember to use your skin care products on your face – that’s what stares back at you in the mirror, after all. But don’t forget to pay attention to your neck and chest, as well – they are often exposed to the same sun and environmental factors as your face.

One of our physician partners, Dr. Joel Schlessinger, answered some questions about the delicate skin on the neck and chest, and what we can do to help take care of it. Read his advice here.

  7. Eat your vitamins (whenever possible).

What better time to reassess your diet than the new year, right? Eating healthier is probably one of the most popular resolutions, and likely one of the promises most abandoned by February. So, break it down a bit: try adding one food at a time to your diet that is packed with the vitamins your body needs. Because even though supplements are convenient, they can never fully replace the nutrition that whole foods provide your body.11

Need some help getting started? Read our recent blog on the power of superfoods.

  8. Invest in a skin care system for your unique skin care needs.

If you’re in your 20s, 30s, 40s, or beyond, now is a great time to find a skin care system that directly addresses the needs of your skin at this point in time. Whether your biggest concern is the fine lines starting to show up, persistent acne, or visible signs of aging, your doctor can help direct you to a system that’s right for you.

If you want to do some research before you visit your skin care physician, take a look at Obagi’s transformation systems.

  9. Consider your true commitment.

Many skin care systems involve 4, 5, or even more steps – and best results often come from using the whole system twice a day. When you visit your doctor and are deciding on a skin care regimen that’s right for you, please honestly consider your commitment level. If you know that you won’t have the time or patience for more than 3 products in your routine, tell your doctor that. He or she can still find a plan to help address your skin concerns, and you’ll be more likely to stick with the system!

  10. Smile often.

Your smile spreads joy to others, which in turn can make you feel that wonderful, happy glow that lights you up from within. It’s a wonderful cycle to be caught in. So in the New Year, remember to laugh more, smile often, and have fun!

Tell us in the comments below…what’s YOUR beauty resolution for next year?

Finding a Skin Routine that Fits: Star’s Obagi Journey

12.02.2014, 14:25 CST | Posted In: Uneven Skin Tone & Dark Spots, Obagi Stories, Products, Skin Care

Star Evangelista, Obagi Nu-Derm testimonial

Growing up on a tiny island in the Philippines called Iloilo City, Star was surrounded by the idea that dark skin is not as attractive as fair skin. After establishing a healthy routine that keeps her at her best and starting an Obagi® skin care system, she loves her look more than ever!

Name: Star Evangelista

Obagi Products Used:
Obagi Nu-Derm® System
Obagi® Sun Shield Matte Broad Spectrum SPF 50

About Star:
Star is a busy career woman and mother from Las Vegas, NV, who is always on the go. Just like many others, she experiences a lot of stress, but a healthy lifestyle, meditation, exercise, a clean diet, laughter, and Obagi help her achieve her best health.

My Obagi Story:
It took me a long time to be comfortable with myself, growing up in a country where dark skin is not considered as attractive as fair skin. Now that I am older, I have never been happier with how I look. However, living in the dry Las Vegas desert was a huge change from growing up in one of the tiny islands in the Philippines, and I needed to find a daily routine that worked for me in my new environment. As a mother and career woman, my challenge was trying to successfully juggle work, family, passion, and fun, and finding a skin regimen that works and doesn’t require too much time was essential.

I have used Obagi for over 10 years, and now I can’t imagine using anything else. I am proud to say that I have not had any surgery nor wear heavy makeup, yet people think I am 15 years younger than I really am.

I attribute my success to hard work, my friends, my family, and my faith in God...the way my skin looks is thanks to Obagi!

Give Thanks to Your Body

11.25.2014, 14:17 CST | Posted In: Lines & Wrinkles, Health & Beauty

Give Thanks to Your Body

This is the time of year to give thanks, and we’re curious…have you taken a moment lately to thank your body? If you haven’t, this may seem like an odd practice at first, but let us explain.

Whether you are at your peak health or not, there is a lot that your body does for you, every minute of every day. We sometimes tend to put our bodies down or spend time wishing that something about our bodies was different. That one little scar, those darn wrinkles, the annoying cellulite on my legs, etc.

Instead of wishing, what if we stopped to give some appreciation to our bodies regularly? We suggest that you take one minute—right now—to give thanks to your body for one or more of the amazing things it does or allows you to do.

Not sure where to start? Here are some ideas—choose what applies and give thanks!

I’m thankful to my body for…

  • My strong legs, which get me where I need to go every day.
  • My eyes, which allow me to read my favorite books.
  • My ears, which turn sounds into conversations and melodies into opportunities to dance.
  • My complex internal organs, which take care of everything automatically so I can focus on what I need to do instead.
  • My taste buds, which let me truly enjoy my favorite foods.
  • My smile lines, which remind me of all the fun times and long laughs I’ve shared with others in the past.
  • My scar, which is a battle mark I wear as a badge of honor, showing that I am a survivor.

These are just some examples to get you started, but we encourage you to take more time saying “thank you” for all your body does for you!

So You’re Considering a Laser Treatment…

11.19.2014, 15:26 CST | Posted In: Acne & Blemishes, Lines & Wrinkles, Texture, Health & Beauty, Skin Care

laser treatment

Dermatologists have been harnessing the power of light to treat skin conditions for over a century, and today, laser technologies are used to help reduce the appearance of acne lesions, facial sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, and more.1

So, are YOU considering a laser treatment to help achieve the desired look and feel for your skin? Here are some questions you may want to consider as you make your decision:

  1. What are the desired goals for your skin?

This is the first question you should ask yourself any time you consider treatment for your skin, whether through a targeted skin care system OR a laser treatment. Are you looking for a smoother complexion, or a more even skin tone? Are acne lesions your main concern? Your skin care physician can help you determine your unique skin needs, as well, so it is essential that you find someone you trust to help you define your skin care goals.

  2. What type of laser treatment will help you achieve your goals?

Fractional technology, CO2, broadband light, pulsed laser systems…there are many options to consider when getting a laser treatment. But don’t worry, because whether you’re looking to lessen the appearance of wrinkles through laser resurfacing or help treat acne or surgical scars through skin rejuvenation techniques, your skin care physician can help you choose the right system for your needs.

  3. What results should I expect from laser therapy?

Everyone is unique in his or her response to any kind of skin care, including laser therapy. Depending on what treatment you are getting, you may experience visible improvement in your skin after one treatment, or your physician may recommend a series of several treatments to help reach your skin care goals. It is very important that you continue to consult with your doctor after your procedure(s) so you understand what to expect from your skin post-treatment. In addition, speak with your physician about whether a product like ReGenica® Facial Rejuvenation Complex may help improve the appearance of your skin post-procedure.

If you take one piece of advice from us as you consider a laser treatment for your skin, it should be to make sure you consult with a skin care physician you trust, who can help guide you through this decision and help you understand what to expect for your skin before, during, and after your laser treatment.
