6 Ways To Truly Enjoy The Holiday Season and Not Let Stress Get To You

The Holidays are often portrayed as a blissful, fun, and magical time in all the best holiday movies.

You know the scene... the snow falling gently outside, while the kids play a friendly game of Scrabble in the living room and the smell of gingerbread cookies fills the house.

Idyllic as that may seem, wouldn’t you agree when we say that in real life it’s a little more chaotic?

Of course it’s still a wonderful time of year, but with all the parties, planning, and gift buying it can quickly feel like it’s spiraling a little out of your control.

The holidays should be about togetherness; special times with those nearest and dearest to you while enjoying all the little things that make this time of year so beautiful: snowy winter landscape, candy cane hot chocolate, and ice skating with your loved ones.

This is why we have put together a simple guide with 6 of our best secrets to help you de-stress this holiday season, and make more time for the important things!

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For Help

Why juggle all the holiday chores yourself when you can get your family involved and make a day out of it?

Set a day aside right before the busy season begins to clean your house from top to bottom, allowing your home to become holiday ready so you can focus on other things, like perfecting that caramel pecan pie!

Get your family involved, and even make a game out of it so that the kids enjoy helping out.

Get Your Holiday Shopping Done Early

We’ve all been there... leaving our holiday shopping ‘til the last minute. All this causes is more stress and double guessing!

The holidays aren’t all about giving gifts, but if you do like to get your friends and family a little something to show how much you care, try to start earlier this year and make it a goal to be done at least 2 weeks prior to the big day. You’ll save so much time and take a lot of pressure off of yourself.

Make Time For Yourself

This doesn’t have to mean booking yourself in for a spa day, if you love to play guitar and rarely get time for it these days… allow yourself 30 minutes per day to remember old tunes you used to love playing. Or paint that picture you’ve been thinking about all year.

Do what relaxes you for 30 minutes per day… this can do wonders for your mind, especially around the holiday season.

Eat Your Greens AND Fats!

We know how tempting it can be to eat all the cookies, pies, and tarts the holiday season brings… and we’re in no way, shape, or form saying that you should stay away from them…

What you should try to do is one healthy habit per day throughout the holiday season whether it be having a nutritious smoothie each day, a plate of greens with each meal, or even better, a green juice once per day. Not only will this help keep you from overindulging, getting your daily greens will help you stay healthy throughout those holiday parties and get-togethers.

The best foods to help you curb overeating are healthy fats such as avocados, nuts, healthy oils (extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil) and vegetables.

Move Your Body

Speaking of keeping your body healthy this season, don’t skimp on the exercise! If you live in California (where we are), you have no excuse not to get outside for a brisk morning walk. If you’re feeling really motivated, how about a hike?

If it’s snowing in your neck of the woods this holiday season, why not try a group yoga class or get moving right in your living room with a quick video workout.

Laugh A Little (or a lot)!

What are the holidays without a bit of fun! Get out your favorite holiday DVD’s or turn on Netflix and spend some quality time with the family and a bowl of popcorn.

If holiday movies aren’t your thing, why not catch the latest stand up from a renowned comedian?

Nothing helps you de-stress quite like a bit of laughter.

Five Super Foods For Beautiful-Looking Skin

Five Super Foods For Beautiful-Looking Skin

You might spend lots of time paying attention to what you apply to your skin externally, but did you know that a healthy, clear complexion actually starts from the inside? These are a few superfoods packed with wonderful properties to literally help you eat your way to the look of beautiful, healthy, glowing and youthful skin.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are very high in lycopene. Lycopene is a carotenoid, a group of pigments that give fruits and vegetables their red, orange, and yellow colors. Twice the strength of beta carotene, lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that helps defend against free radicals such as those caused by UVA and UVB rays.1

It has been suggested that lycopene, such as that found in tomatoes, may help calm skin and improve the appearance of skin texture, making it appear more youthful-looking.2,7

Flaxseeds

High in essential fatty acids and a source of antioxidants, flaxseeds help improve the moisture holding capacity of skin, which is useful for undernourished, dry skin with a lack of luster.3,4 By locking in moisture, flaxseeds help keep skin soft and hydrated, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines.

Dark Chocolate

Yes you read it correctly! The only catch is that it must have at least 70% cocoa and you don’t eat too much. In this case, less is more and a little goes a long way.

Dark chocolate is filled with flavanols, strong antioxidants that can help neutralize oxidative stress.5

The cocoa in dark chocolate increases blood flow to the skin, contributing to increased skin hydration and the overall maintenance of skin health.5

Red Grapes

The skin of red grapes is rich in resveratrol, an antioxidant and natural polyphenol that helps defend against free radicals and may help with the signs of photoaging.6,7

And guess what? Dark chocolate also makes the list for a delicious source of resveratrol.8 The good news doesn’t stop here! You can even have your dark chocolate with nuts for an extra bonus dose of resveratrol.6

Pomegranates

Another fruit with great antioxidant properties is the pomegranate. They are an excellent source of flavanoids, potassium, vitamin C, and other important nutrients.

The juice, seed, and peel of this fruit have been reported to contain strong antioxidant activity, which helps defend the skin against free radicals and may help with the appearance of photoaging. Its antioxidant properties may also help calm skin.9

Next time you shop, be sure to add these foods to your cart. They may not only help benefit your skin, but your health too. They may make you feel wonderful and give you a boost of energy so you are ready to take on your day.* It will be an added bonus when people stop you to ask you what secret skin product you are using to give you that beautiful-looking glow!

Why You Should Wash Your Face with a Cleanser Instead of Soap

Obagi Non-soap Cleansers

We have all, at some point, felt frustrated with the condition of our skin. Dry, flaky, sensitive, too oily, prone to breakouts. Sound familiar?

The interesting fact is that your skin’s health is directly linked to the balance between acidity and alkalinity, which is measured by the pH scale.1

All soaps, lotions, cleansers, and other skin care products have an effect on the pH level of your skin.

How Does pH work?

The pH level of a substance is measured on a scale of 0 to 14: 0 is the most acidic, 14 is the most alkaline, and 7 is neutral, which is the pH of pure water.

The surface of normal adult skin is coated with a combination of sebum, skin’s natural oil, and perspiration. This coating is referred to as the acid mantle, which protects the skin and locks in moisture.2 Normal adult skin is slightly acidic with a pH level in the range of 5.4 - 5.9.1

There is a delicate balance with skin’s pH - when the pH is too alkaline, the skin becomes dry and very sensitive, which may lead to signs of skin aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles.3

What is the pH Level of my Skin?

Normally you can quite easily determine the pH level of your skin, by taking a look at the behavior of your skin. For instance, if your skin is oily and acne-prone it may be overly acidic. If it tends to be dry, sensitive and flaky, it may be too alkaline.

You can buy pH testing strips at your favorite drugstore to test in the comfort of your home. An alternative would be to consult your skin care physician to get a more accurate reading.

So Why Cleanser Instead of Soap?

Soap has a general pH level of between 9 and 10, which can make your skin feel very clean, but is just way too harsh. It removes all natural oils from your skin making the pH level too alkaline.1 This can cause a host of new problems - the skin becomes dry, flaky, and prone to inflammation. This can cause the sebaceous glands to overproduce oil to compensate for the dryness causing clogged pores and breakouts.3 When skin is overly dry and flaky, it can also lead to premature fine lines and wrinkles.

Cleansers are generally at a much lower pH level than soaps and are gentler on your skin

Different cleansers have been developed for different skin types

Oily skin can benefit from an “active” cleanser, such as the CLENZIderm M.D.™ Daily Care Foaming Cleanser. This particular cleanser contains 2% salicylic acid to unclog pores and wash away dead skin cells, leaving skin feeling clean and refreshed. It also includes calming menthol to help cool irritated skin.

The Obagi360™ Exfoliating Cleanser works chemically and mechanically to help clear clogged pores that can cause dull, dry, uneven skin. It thoroughly cleanses skin to reveal a soft, smooth, and radiant complexion.

Dry and sensitive skin will benefit from a gentle “resting” cleanser. The Gentle Rejuvenation Soothing Cleanser is specifically formulated to cleanse delicate skin while soothing, rinsing clean to leave skin feeling comfortable and soft. You really can’t go wrong with the Obagi Nu-Derm® Gentle Cleanser as it gets the job done by gently removing makeup and everyday impurities for a clean, fresh complexion.

Skin showing the appearance of aging may benefit from a cleanser with Vitamin C, such as the Obagi-C® Rx C-Cleansing Gel, which is designed to help clarify and prepare your skin for other products, while also removing makeup and oil.

Remember: a good cleanser will work with the skin, not stripping it from its natural oils and drying it out.

Bottom Line

Avoid harsh soaps on your face, such as bar soaps, which have an alkalinity level between 9 and 10. Use facial cleansers, which have a lower pH level and are specifically designed to cleanse the face.

And on a separate (but important) note: eat a healthy, balanced diet to regulate the pH level of your body.4 Avoid processed foods and eat plenty of fruits and veggies, which will help keep your skin glowing and radiant!

Difference Between a Lotion and a Cream

woman examining lotions at store

We all want beautiful, soft, hydrated skin. It can, however, be overwhelming and confusing when presented with so many different choices; for example: do I need a lotion or a cream? Both are mixtures of oil and water, but what is the difference? Each cream and lotion has its own unique composition and benefits.

Lotion

Lotions have a higher water percentage and, to put it simply, are droplets of oil mixed in water.

Lotions tend to be light-weight, non-greasy, and are more easily absorbed into the skin. They are excellent for normal to slightly dry skin.

Lotions are normally sold in bottles and have a liquid consistency. The basic rule is to use lotion during the day and in hot summer months, when you want a product to absorb fast and not leave a greasy residue on your skin.

Cream

Cream is a blend of oil and water with a higher oil percentage - basically droplets of water mixed in oil.

Cream may be heavier and richer than lotion and, therefore, thicker in consistency. For this reason, cream is typically sold in a jar. It is the better choice for dry to very dry skin and better for normal skin during the harsh winter months. Cream provides a barrier that helps keep the skin ultra-hydrated, which is why it is recommended for nighttime use. Obagi’s Gentle Rejuvenation Advanced Night Repair and Hydrate Luxe creams provide deep hydration while you sleep, helping to improve the appearance of aging skin.

Benefits of Lotion and Cream

Both lotion and cream hydrate dry skin, but cream is the better option for very dry skin. Both help protect the skin against the harsh effects of our environment, namely heat, cold, and wind. The secret to lock in moisture is to apply immediately after a bath or shower when your skin is still slightly damp.

Lotions and creams are also available as body products. They can help moisturize rough areas such as elbows, knees, feet, and hands. Experiment a bit to see which one you prefer on various parts of the body. Massaging either one into your skin can make you feel pampered and relaxed.

We hope this blog helps you next time you are in need of a moisturizer, but aren’t sure what to choose! Let us know in the comments below if you prefer one over the other.

Why Should I Use A Tinted Sunscreen?

Obagi Sunscreen Tint outdoor shot

We can’t deny that summertime is a blast – it brings outdoor activities, vacations, and the kids are out of school. It’s quite challenging, actually impossible, to stay indoors and avoid the sun all season long. Therefore, it’s vital to protect ourselves and our loved ones against the harmful effects of the sun. Keep in mind that we need protection at all times, not only while we are having fun in the sun.*

How does the sun affect us?1

There are three types of rays: UVA, UVB, and UVC rays. UVA rays are long wavelength (320-400 nm) and are present year-round, accounting for up to 95% of the solar UV radiation reaching the surface of the earth. They can penetrate glass and clouds, and in certain times of the year, can be 30-50 times more dominant than UVB rays.

UVB rays are mid-range wavelength (290-320 nm) and do not penetrate glass. Their intensity varies from time of year, time of day, and location. In the US, they are most prevalent from April to October, between 10 AM and 4 PM.

Both UVA and UVB cause harmful effects to the skin such as sunburn, wrinkles, dark spots, and other skin changes. They also increase the risk of skin cancer.

UVC rays have the shortest wavelengths (less than 290 nm). They do not affect skin because they are absorbed by the ozone layer and do not reach the earth.

What is tinted sunscreen and what can it do for me?

Tinted sunscreen is a sunscreen product that combines a colored-base with UV protection. As complexion-enhancers, they are able to give your skin a healthy glow while helping to protect your skin from the sun. This two in one benefit allows you to cut back on your getting-ready time. Like all sunscreens, they should be applied generously and reapplied every 2 hours, and after swimming or sweating!

Obagi's Sun Shield Tint Broad Spectrum SPF 50 sunscreens provide skin protection against UVA and UVB radiation plus infrared defense, which helps to buffer the skin from heat-derived oxidative stress. They are available in Cool and Warm shades for different skin tones. The Cool shade is recommended for pale, fair skin with blue, red or pink undertones. Warm is recommended for darker complexions with yellow, gold or olive undertones. This tinted sunscreen is sheer, hypoallergenic, and fragrance-free. Click here to see which physicians near you carry Sun Shield Tint, and find out which shade is right for you.

Tip: Keep an extra one in your purse or beach bag to ensure this must-have item is always within reach. Enjoy and have fun!
