I began caring for skin midway in my Plastic Surgical career when I noticed people still looked "old", even after complete surgical rejuvenation of their faces. The reason for this became obvious that the color and texture of these patients' skin was abnormal, even after the folding and deeper wrinkles had been removed. To correct this, I began using hydroquinone, alpha hydroxyls and Retin-A®, but without the results that I wanted. About eight years ago I switched to the Obagi Nu-Derm system. This, while using the same basic ingredients, resulted in two to three times better results and met my expectations for facial rejuvenation. I had also stopped doing laser and deep peels because of resultant depigmentation or spotty pigmentation. With marked improvement in the skin from the Obagi system, I began tentatively using the laser and doing peels again. What I found was that we got better results than before with essentially no pigmentary abnormalities. For anyone needing a laser procedure or deep peel to correct wrinkles or fine lines, my present regime is to use the Obagi Nu-Derm System for at least 12 weeks and then perform the procedure. I have continued to be very satisfied with the results. In late 1999, I moved my practice to a mountain resort with both a year-round population and a group who stayed outside in our cool summers and then returned south, where they played outside in the warm winters. This population, thus, had more severely sun damaged skin than I had previously seen. However, even in this population, by use of the Nu-Derm system, I have achieved excellent skin rejuvenation and have been able to maintain the rejuvenation using the Obagi System together with Healthy Skin Protection sunblock.
