Study in peer-reviewed COSMETIC DERMATOLOGY Confirms Improved Treatment for
Individuals Suffering From Premature Skin Damage.
LONG BEACH, CA, May 2, 2006 – Obagi Medical Products, Inc. (Obagi), today
announced the positive clinical results for the Obagi® Nu-Derm® System to treat
photodamaged skin were published in the April 2006 edition of the peer-reviewed
journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.
In the 387-person randomized study, patients received one of four treatment
strategies over a 24-week period: the Obagi Nu-Derm System, a regimen of
systematically dosed over-the-counter (OTC) products with hydroquinone plus
tretinoin; hydroquinone plus OTC products; tretinoin plus OTC products, and OTC
products alone. After 12 and 24 weeks of treatment, improvements using the
Obagi Nu-Derm System were greater than and statistically superior to those
observed with the other treatment regimens. At 12 weeks, the Obagi Nu-Derm
System patients experienced a two-fold improvement in fine lines and wrinkles
than those observed in all other groups. At 24 weeks, Obagi Nu-Derm patients
experienced a four-fold improvement in perioral and periocular wrinkles, as well
as markedly greater improvements in fine lines and laxity compared to other
groups. No adverse events were reported in the Obagi Nu-Derm System group.
“The use of the Obagi Nu-Derm System in the treatment of photodamaged skin
provides significantly greater improvements in wrinkles, laxity, and mottled
hyperpigmentation than other systems tested,” said Dr. James H. Herndon, Jr.,
lead investigator in the study.
Steve Carlson, Obagi's President and CEO, stated “We are pleased to see the
final results of this important study published in Cosmetic Dermatology. Obagi
hopes to corroborate and extend these results with other studies already
underway that demonstrate the positive and synergistic effects of combining the
Obagi Nu-Derm System with other cosmetic procedures.”
The study, titled “Efficacy of a Tretinoin/Hydroquinone-Based Skin Health System
in the Treatment of Facial Photodamage” was published in the April 2006 issue of
Cosmetic Dermatology (Volume 19 No. 4: Pages 255-261) by James H. Herndon, Jr.,
M.D., Thomas J. Stephens, Ph.D., and Moyna L. Sigler, Ph.D. Obagi provided
products and financial support for the study.
